My artwork explores the interaction between light and form through ceramic table lamps and hanging pieces . I am drawn to light because it is constantly changing. In the morning light feels gentle when it pours through my window shades, in the afternoon light is bright blinding me on my walk to class, and at night I surround myself with artificial lights to brighten my surroundings. Light doesn't just have the ability to transform how you view the objects around you, it also has the ability to change how you feel in a space. Different lighting can change the atmosphere of a room. Warm lighting creates a relaxing and cozy atmosphere compared to bright lighting which creates an uplifting and energizing atmosphere. The constant change and different color of light captivates me because depending how things are illuminated can affect how an object looks and makes you feel.
When light and form interact, it reveals how light defines surface, texture, and depth. Shadows and highlights activate each piece, emphasizing carved patterns and creating a sense of movement across the form. The shifting of elements allows you to look at the beauty beyond the objects themself. I begin planning by drawing my ideas out then handbuilding each piece in varying shapes and sizes. I carve unique designs and details into their surfaces allowing light to pass through and project shadows onto surrounding surfaces. I incorporate glaze for color and add materials such as sea glass, beads, wire, and rope to enhance contrast, texture, and dimensionality.
Each vessel is lit up with different light sources including tea lights, lightbulbs and natural sunlight, allowing light to become an active part of the pieces rather than a passive condition. Every piece functions as its own study of how light interacts with form. Through this process, I invite the viewers to think about how lighting shapes their perception of objects elements.
